Self-Portraits

This year the children created a monthly self-portrait. I have compiled the photos into one video for families to enjoy.

These simple drawings are windows into the growth and development of the children through the year. Look at the August portrait for each and compare to May’s drawing. You will see how close details have been added – the addition of eye lashes, eye brows and ears.

How did this growth happen? Through daily drawing and fine motor experiences such as playdough, beading, cutting and sand play, each child strengthened their small muscles. Through discussions focussed on observations, the children learned to look closely at their reflections as they drew.

Isn’t it amazing to see their growth in one year?

May 11 – 15 – Butterfly, Biscuits and Bear Shirts

Highlights from this week!

  • We’ve been the tracking the progress of the chrysalis. We looked at it during lunch today and just after the children left, the butterfly emerged! Ms.Abbie and Ms.Isa captured it on video:

  • The children worked on t-shirts for the concert in Art. The prints are lovely bear (or bearcat) images drawn by each child.
  • We watched 2 circus performances this week. First we watched some humorous clowns in Grade 6 on Monday. Today they watched a Grade 3 PE circus performance. The Dolphins are a wonderful audience. Ask your child which performance they preferred and why?
  • In PE, Coach Nat had the tricycles and scooters in the covered court for our use. What a great opportunity to practice their pedalling and steering skills!
  • Each child did their monthly self-portrait as well as a drawing about what they have learned in Preschool. They are all drawing with detail and control now!
  • The class have decided to plan a birthday party for Baby Dolphin. I look forward to seeing their ideas and plans come into action over the next few weeks.
  • We made alphabet biscuits for cooking this week! Ask your child how they made the biscuits.

May 4 – 8; S’mores, Green Hands and Bear Hunts!

What a wonderful week!

After a request to explore with flashlights in the science area, we built a cave and provided 4 flashlights. The class created a safety agreement and have been exploring all week! Other highlights include:

  • Comparing the length and height of animals using cubes
  • Creating special cards for Mother’s Day – look for them in your child’s backpack!
  • Making styro prints in Art. Ask me what I drew!
  • Working in the birthday shop in the dramatic area.
  • Practicing for our concert in Music with Ms.Peachy.
  • Very exciting – we went on a bear hunt in PE today!
  • Yesterday we made s’mores together. As your child what happened to the marshmallow in the microwave. Look at your child’s individual blog for a video of eating the s’mores – there is one for almost everyone.

Wacky Waffle Day

The Jellyfish class invited the Dolphin Class to join them in having a pancake and pajama day. The Dolphin class was happy to join but decided to make waffles and call it ‘Wacky Waffle Day.” The class planned the day, and I added a few surprises. After pretending to brush our teeth, we had sleep over (that lasted 5 minutes) and woke up to a rooster crowing. After Music, we pretended to drive in a car to the rainbow waffle restaurant and eat fruit and waffles. The class loved having gymnastics in their pajamas! On our walk back to class, we saw our Grade 4 buddy class being scientists and experimenting with dropping eggs. It was a busy, exciting day!

Student Led Conferences

The students are becoming more aware of themselves as learners. In preparation for the conferences, we spent time talking about what we have learned in our classroom. The class worked in small groups to think of ideas of how to show this in each of the areas; after voting on their final decisions, they thought of what materials was needed to share these experiences with their families:

During the conference they shared some of the pieces of work in their learning journals, as well as three areas in the classroom.  It was a wonderful time for parents to see and hear about the learning happening in Preschool.

Thank you for taking the time to come into our classrooms. We appreciate it!

Worms!

We have new pets! Ms.Walshe’s Grade 5 class gave us their worm bin on Thursday. They brought the worms down and then explained to us how to care for our new friends. Here are the photos of our introduction. Some of us were very brave and held the worms: SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Ask your child what they have learned about worms and how we need to care for them.

Cultural Shares

Thank you to all the parents for our wonderful cultural shares. The class made a lot of connections and discoveries as they learned about some of the different countries represented by students in our class.
